RUTLEDGE WOOD JOINS NBC SPORTS GROUP AS MOTORSPORTS SPECIALTY REPORTER

I am beyond thrilled to announce that I will be joining the NBC Sports family in 2015 to cover NASCAR and a host of other motor sport events.  I cannot thank all of the friends and fans that have supported me, and hopefully will continue to support me, along the way.  This is a dream come true and I can’t wait to get started.  See you in 2015!!

Well-Known Personality Brings His Passion for Cars and Motorsports to NBC and NBCSN’s Coverage of NASCAR, F1, IndyCar, Rallycross and Mecum

STAMFORD, Conn. — December 16, 2014 — NBC Sports Group today added reporter Rutledge Wood to its multiplatform coverage of NASCAR, Formula 1, IndyCar, Global Rallycross and Mecum Auctions.  Among his contributions, Wood will present features on the storied raceways, unique towns and enthusiastic fans that make NASCAR an American treasure. The announcement was made today by Jeff Behnke, Vice President of NASCAR Production for NBC Sports and NBCSN.

“Rutledge brings a unique combination of knowledge and enthusiasm to his work that will help us shine a spotlight on the tracks and communities we visit throughout the year, and bring them to life,” said Behnke.

“It’s hard to put into words how unbelievably excited I am to be a part of NBC and their return to NASCAR,” said Wood.  “Working in motorsports is a dream come true for me, as I have so much fun telling the stories of drivers, teams and their fans. Just like NASCAR, NBC Sports is a family, and it’s one that I am proud to be a part of.”

The appointment of Wood follows previous NBC Sports NASCAR on-air announcements for analysts Jeff BurtonSteve Letarte and Kyle Petty, race announcer Rick Allen, pre- and post-race host Krista Voda, and reporters Marty SniderKelli StavastMike Massaro and Dave Burns.

Wood’s first experience in NASCAR came during his first job in entertainment: traveling with the NASCAR circuit for Country Music Television’s mobile marketing activation.  Soon after, he was hired by SPEED, where he has worked continuously for the past 10 seasons covering NASCAR.  Wood most recently was a correspondent for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pre-race show, NASCAR RaceDay, on Fox Sports 1, and has also hosted or co-hosted several NASCAR events, including the annual NASCAR Awards Banquet.  In addition, Wood has been the co-host of Top Gear on the History Channel, the American iteration of the BBC program of the same name, for the past four seasons.

On July 23, 2013, NASCAR and NBC Sports Group reached a comprehensive agreement that grants NBCUniversal exclusive rights to the final 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, final 19 NASCAR XFINITY Series events, select NASCAR Regional & Touring Series events and other live content, beginning in 2015.

With this partnership, NBC’s 20 Sprint Cup race schedule includes a designation as the exclusive home to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, when the elite national series races through its final 10 events of the season.  The Chase culminates with the season-ending championship event, which returns to network television in 2015 for the first time since 2009. Of NBC Sports Group’s 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, seven will be carried on NBC annually, with 13 airing on NBCSN. Four of NBC Sports Group’s 19 NASCAR XFINITY Series races will air on NBC, with 15 airing on NBCSN.

NASCAR AMERICA premiered in February, following Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Daytona 500 victory and NBC Sports Group’s multi-platform coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The weekday 30-minute news and highlights program is dedicated to America’s fascination with speed and stock car racing, and features regular appearances by NBC Sports NASCAR experts, as well as a rotation of guest analysts.

SEMA 2014 Day 3

Thursday was my last day at SEMA 2014.  On Friday I was hopping on a plane to Phoenix for the second to last NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.  I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I know it will be wild! Can’t wait to see if unfold!

Anyway, Thursday was unbelievable! I began the day chatting with my good friends from Summit Racing’s OnAllCylinders.com blog. Next I headed over to MagnaFlow’s booth to sign some autographs, and check out Chip Foose’s custom Ford GT40.  Afterward, I was walking around Central Hall, when I ran into the Urban Outlaw, MAGNUS WALKER and saw his beautifully handcrafted Porsche 911.  I wrapped up the day judging a 3M Car Wrap competition alongside the adorable Jessie Combs.  Check it all out here:

End of Summer and SEMA

Where does the time go?

It seems like this year has flown by! Not only are we past the summer and all of its fun, we’re almost ready for SEMA again…and bigger than that for me personally, the return of Top Gear on History, September 30th at 9pm.

I’ve been working away this year with my friends on lots of different projects, and I’m so happy to say, the 1953 Plymouth Suburban that I built with Summit Racing is officially DONE! To be honest, this might be the first car that I’ve actually completed every single thing I’ve wanted to do to it…and everything works! There are lots and lots of people to thank for this masterpiece: Nan, Alan, and everyone at Summit Racing Equipment, Kirsten at Magnaflow, Maria at Odyssey Battery, Bryan at Sherwin Williams, Brian, Chris, Brian and everyone at Brian’s Paint and Body (lots of Brian’s) who worked so hard on this thing, and of course, Randy, Steve, and Gary at the Kenwood Rod Shop in Sharpsburg,GA….and all the wonderful people that helped make this dream a reality.  You can see some pics below…

Speaking of turning dreams into reality, I had the chance to show off my new build to the man who gave it to me; THE KING himself!  Do yourself a favor, and watch his incredible reaction right HERE!

The boys at Kenwood are some of the most talented, kindest, and most fun guys I’ve ever met. The time we got to spend with them on the Power Tour is something I’ll never forget, and I hope we get to do that again this year! Or, if I can’t make it because of work, maybe we start a tradition of our own little trip with people that love cars. If you want to read about our trip and some of the fun we had, check it out here on the On All Cylinders blog.

If you’re a car nut and going to SEMA, we’re trying to finalize a few details as we speak, but we’ll have that schedule posted as soon as we can and hopefully you can come see me at lots of the booth’s I’ll be meeting people. Big thanks to Guy Haynie at Haynie Designs for some of the super cool stuff I’ll have to sign.

If you’re around Georgia, come say hello to me at the Cruisin to the Oldies car show in Senoia, GA on September 27th. I will have my ’53 Plymouth and ’49 Chevy Step Van in front of or very close to my parent’s restaurant, Katie Lou’s Café, which is located on Main Street right next to the buggy shop. You definitely won’t miss us there! It’s a super cute town and lots of cool cars show up that day. Say hello if you’ll be there.

Don’t forget, Top Gear is back on History for the LAST 4 shows of this season. We’ve had an amazing time doing this show over the years, and I hope these aren’t our last shows we do…SO….please tell lots of people to watch! TV is a crazy world and at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how good or bad a show is, it just matters if people watch. So if Top Gear on History matters to you, just like it does to me, please tell all your friends to watch so we can keep making more of these amazing shows!

If you want to sport some Rut gear and show the world, please check out my store

See you on Twitter @RutledgeWood and Like me on Facebook here.

I promise I’ll be back and update the site more often…especially after I get to share some good news soon!

Come see me at SEMA!

That time of year is upon us again friends! It’s time for the biggest auto industry show in the world…SEMA!

This is stacking up to be my busiest year at SEMA yet and I can’t wait to meet lots of new people there and show off two of my cars, which is a dream come true!

My friends at Magnaflow helped me so much this year on the maiden voyage of my 1949 Chevy Step Van on the Hot Rod Power Tour, and now they can’t shake me! My ’49 will be there in all its aluminum glory, loaded with all the goodies that I picked up at Summit Racing.  I can’t say enough how awesome everyone at Summit was in this build.  It’s hard to build something this custom as it turns out, and every time I picked up the phone to order parts, I was talking to someone that knew and loved cars just like I did and that meant the world to me.  You’ll know this beast when you see it for sure.  Think 40’s Bread Truck meets modern family hot rod meets American Pickers.  There’s a good chance you’ll hear it before you see it since it’s got an insane Magnaflow side exit exhaust letting that Chevy Performance LS3 send out some good vibes to the masses.  Custom Asanti Wheels make this thing sit pretty, and Lucra worked their aluminum magic inside to perfectly lay out the cockpit for the new Recaro seats.

I’m also bringing my newly acquired dream car! That’s right…It’s the Scion xB from the “Make your own Taxi” show of Top Gear on History.  This beast has a Toyota Supra 2JZGTE sitting under the hood and it has been converted to rear wheel drive.  This wagon is the real deal and I’m still in shock that it’s actually mine.  It’s got a whole new look though, so don’t look for the taxi light on top.  It’s now Stain Pearl White thanks to a killer 3M Graphics wrap, and it’s sitting on some beautiful PURPLE Advan TC-III rims with super sticky Hankook Ventus rubber.  Magnaflow did a full custom turbo back exhaust on it that looks and sounds incredible. Recaro seats up front will have all my friends begging to ride shotgun with me!

My schedule is down below for those that are coming to the show.  I get to kick off the week with my friends at Toyota Racing.  I’m back hosting the Dream Build Challenge which happens Tuesday morning.  It will also be available on the web to those who can’t make the show.  There are some really crazy builds that are worth checking out, so I hope you’ll watch at home or live in person!

Other than that, we’ve just been busy busy with Top Gear.  Thank you all so much for watching! I hope you’re enjoying them as much as we are making them.  And if you’re watching me with NASCAR on Fox Sports 1, thank you too!  I can’t believe how tight the points are! I think it’s all coming down to Miami and the last laps!

Peace and Love friends.  Thanks for all the support,

Rut

Hey guys!  It’s been too long since I have updated this place.  Sorry about that, but I’ve been super busy filming Season 4 of Top Gear and traveling every week with NASCAR for my duties on SPEED!  Just living the … Continue reading

A BIG Announcement – Rutspeed and Volatile Style

What’s up everyone!

The off season from NASCAR is almost over, which means I’ll be heading to Daytona soon for Speedweeks, but before that, Top Gear is back on History with 10 shows to close out season 3, starting January 29th @ 9pm EST.

We have had so much fun this season shooting Top Gear…I can’t wait for you guys to see the shows.  But that’s not all the news I have to share…

We’ve been really busy behind the scenes making it all happen, but I’m so proud to tell you guys that I’m one of the new owners of Volatile Style clothing.  It’s a small brand made right here in Atlanta that was started by two friends, Guy Haynie and Brandon Paul.  We’ve got some really fun ideas of fun shirts, hoodies, and more to bring you guys.

I’ve always been really fascinated by street wear and especially automotive inspired gear, and that’s what we’re going to be pumping out.  Check out the website Volatile Style.

We’re also bringing Rutspeed to the masses!  A couple years before I started traveling with SPEED, I was planning on opening an auto repair/ car sales shop that I was going to call Rutspeed.  We made some stickers for all of my friends, and we’ve all been rocking them quietly ever since.  Well, it’s time to let that little secret out and have some fun with it!

First edition Rutspeed shirts are available for preorder.  All orders placed between now and the end of tomorrow night’s Top Gear premier will receive $2 off  of the retail price!  The shirts are in printing as of this writing and should be available to ship in 7-10 days. You can get your’s here.

What is Rutspeed?  I guess it’s sort of the pace that I live at in one respect…but it’s also a love for people and a love for cars of all kinds.  I think what makes all of us car people click is the fact that cars/bikes/trucks/whatever all strike a chord in our hearts.  WE all have fun memories about family trips, or our first car, or maybe even our first race.  I like all kinds of crazy and weird cars, and let’s be honest, the aftermarket industry is so big because people love to express themselves through what they own and drive.

So what vehicle best represents Rutspeed and Volatile?  Well, I think it’s a 1949 Chevy Step Van. IMG_1439

But not just any step van…one built by an amazing shop called American Resto Mods in Buford, GA.  This aluminum bodied monster is going to be sitting on a ’99 Chevy 2500 HD frame, complete with a thumping fuel injected Chevy LS engine and beautiful Magnaflow exhaust on it.

Tons and tons of custom work will be done to make this thing cruise down the road, and I knew I needed to do it right and find a shop that I could trust, and I hit a home run with ARM.  I found them through my friend Tracy Shayhorn, who’s a jack of all trades in the autmotive world.  She’s a drifter, a performance shop owner, and she writes for a bunch of different outlets.

The big push for the ’49 is to get it ready for the Hot Rod Power Tour.  This is a cross country parade of awesome cars that Hot Rod does every year.  I’ve always wanted to be a part of it, and my friend Kyle Petty does too, so we’re going to make it happen this year.  We’re pretty pumped since it’s a southern route this year, so for once we know we can make it happen.

You can follow the build of the ’49 here but you can see it in person at any of the shows that Volatile will be hitting up this summer and beyond.

SO, that’s a huge blog for now and if you made it this far, thank you.  Keep an eye out for some killer Volatile stuff, Rutspeed, my ’49 Chevy, and most of all, Top Gear starting January 29th ! See you guys on tv…and thanks for all the support! Much love!

Who needs an offseason?

NASCAR is over for the year, and we’re full speed ahead finishing season 3 of Top Gear on History which should debut early 2013.  I can’t wait for you guys to see all the new shows we’ve been working so hard on.  For this season, we left the country, went too far out into the countryside, and have gotten to drive some insane cars.

People ask me a lot if I know how lucky I am to have my dream job(s), getting to travel with NASCAR for SPEED and do Top Gear for the History Channel, and I want you to know the answer is a resounding “YES!”  I absolutely love what I do, and I love the people I get to do these things with.  There are so many great people behind the scenes at both places that really put their heart and souls into what we create.

It still makes me laugh that the reason I got a call to meet with the executive producer of Top Gear happened because a race fan, whom I’ve never met, loaded something that I did on SPEED, on to YouTube (illegally mind you) and because they did that, this British producer laughed and thought I’d be interesting to talk to.  That one person helped change my life forever and get to live out my dreams and I get to take you guys all along for the ride…so yeah, I am thankful every day that I get this chance, and I pray every day that I can take this opportunity and do all the things that God wants me to do with them.

This year was a great year, but a long one. I was lucky enough to get to race in the Toyota Pro Celebrity Race, which is something I dreamed of growing up, and I have gotten to drive some cars that people only dream of.  And so now, with the holidays approaching, I’m going to get the chance to remind my beautiful wife why she puts up with this crazy schedule, and hold my beautiful daughters closer than they even know possible.

And yeah, if there’s any time left over after that, then I’m going to get to work on some car projects.  I think the one I’m most excited about is the 1949 Chevy Step Van  that I picked up a few weeks ago.  It’s like a UPS van from the 40’s, but I tried to buy one just like it in college and it sold before I could get to it, so I’m going to try and make it a really cool cruiser.  I’d love to finish it in time for the Hot Rod Power Tour that Hot Rod Magazine does every year, so keep your fingers crossed for me on that.

I do have some big news that I’ll get to tell you about in a few weeks…I’m joining forces with some good friends to be a part of a really cool company that I hope we get to grow in some amazing ways.  More to come on that soon!

For now, I gotta run because I have a plane to catch…thanks for reading, and more importantly, thanks for the support.  A lot of people probably thought the nerdy, thick glasses kid from Alabama couldn’t make it this far, and I feel like I’m just getting started….so thanks for helping me get to this point.  Happy Holidays!
